with forgiveness equal to it.”
The phrase qirāb al-ard (the earth’s fill) means its full measure, or what nearly fills it. Thus, obtaining this forgiveness is conditioned upon one’s creed being free of shirk in every form—whether much or little, major or minor. Whoever meets that condition possesses a sound heart, about whom Allah says: “On the Day when neither wealth nor children will avail, except him who comes to Allah with a sound heart.” ⦗1⦘
The eminent scholar Ibn al-Qayyim, d. 751 AH, said regarding the ḥadīth of ʿItbān: “Allah overlooks, for the people of unadulterated tawḥīd, what He does not overlook for others. If a believer who never committed any shirk whatsoever were to meet his Lord with sins filling the earth, Allah would meet him with forgiveness filling the earth. This is not granted to someone whose tawḥīd is deficient, for pure monotheism untouched by shirk leaves no sin remaining. It entails such love of Allah, reverence, glorification, fear, and hope directed to Him alone that it washes away sins, even if they were as vast as the earth itself. Sin is an incidental impurity, and the forces that remove it are strong …” End quote.
A sound creed is also the basis upon which deeds are accepted and benefit their doer. Allah the Exalted says: “Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer, We will surely grant him a good life, and We will surely reward them according to the best of what they used to do.” ⦗2⦘
Conversely, a corrupt creed nullifies every deed. Allah the Exalted says: “It has already been revealed to you and to those before you that if you associate anything with Allah, your deeds will surely be nullified and you will surely be among the losers.” ⦗3⦘ And He says: “But if they had associated others with Allah, all that they used to do would have been rendered void.” ⦗4⦘
A creed tainted by shirk bars one from Paradise and forgiveness and necessitates punishment and eternal residence in the Fire. Allah the Exalted says: “Indeed, Allah does not forgive that a partner be associated with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.” ⦗5⦘ And He says: “Whoever associates others with Allah, Allah has forbidden Paradise to him, and his refuge will be the Fire; and the wrongdoers shall have no helpers.” ⦗6⦘
