an image in the likeness of a creature that Allah Himself has fashioned—then what of the one who goes so far as to place a created being on a par with the Lord of all worlds and even directs some act of worship to it?!
3- Al-Bukhari and Muslim—may Allah have mercy on them—narrate from Ibn ʿAbbas ⦗may Allah be pleased with him⦘: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Every image-maker will have a soul assigned to each image he produced, and he will be punished by that soul in Hell.”
The meaning is that on the Day of Resurrection the very pictures he made in this life will be brought before him. A soul will be placed in every single one—whether they be few or many—and from each picture a figure will be formed that will torment him in Hell.
4- Al-Bukhari and Muslim also relate from Ibn ʿAbbas: “Whoever fashions a picture will be charged to breathe life into it, and he will never be able to do so.”
This is yet another form of punishment for the image-maker. Its meaning is clear: all the images he produced in the world will be set before him, and he will be ordered to blow life into each of them. How could he, when the soul is “of the affair of my Lord”? It is pure torment and a demonstration of his helplessness, for he is tasked with what he cannot possibly accomplish. The hadith thus points to the prolonged nature of his punishment and exposes his impotence in the face of what he once presumed to do—imitating Allah’s creation.
5- Muslim—may Allah have mercy on him—relates from Abu al-Hayyaj, who said: ʿAli ⦗may Allah be pleased with him⦘ told me, “Shall I not send you on the mission on which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me? Do not leave any image without obliterating it, and do not leave any raised grave without leveling it.”
This hadith commands the obliteration of images—that is, altering them so they no longer remain in a form that resembles Allah’s creation—and it mandates demolishing the structures built over graves, whether domes, mosques, or other manifestations of idolatry. In this single report we are ordered to eradicate two of the greatest means that lead to polytheism and pave the way for it, namely:
