in their assemblies.

The Prophet ﷺ warned against image-making in all its forms: he prohibited it, threatened those who practise it with the severest punishment, and commanded that images be effaced or altered. The reason is that making images is an attempt to rival Allah’s unique act of creation. The person who fashions an image is, in effect, trying to imitate Allah in that which belongs to Him alone. Moreover, image-making is one of the pathways that lead to shirk. The first appearance of shirk on earth occurred through image-making, when Satan beautified for the people of Noah the idea of depicting the righteous, setting up their likenesses in their assemblies so that they might remember them and emulate their devotion—until the matter ended with worshipping those very images and believing that they could benefit or harm apart from Allah.

Image-making, then, is the fountainhead of idolatry, for depicting a creature usually entails venerating it and becoming attached to it—especially when the subject enjoys authority, knowledge, or piety. When an image is further magnified by mounting it on a wall or erecting it in a street or public square, the ignorant and the misguided will inevitably grow attached to it, sooner or later. This practice also opens the door to setting up idols and statues that are worshipped instead of Allah.

I shall now cite the sound and explicit hadiths on this subject and offer brief comments on them.

1- Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Allah, Exalted be He, said: Who is more unjust than one who seeks to create as I create? Let them create a gnat, or let them create a grain of wheat, or let them create a barley kernel.” Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Its meaning is that no one is more oppressive than the image-maker, for when he fashions a form resembling that which Allah has created—whether a human being, an animal, or any other creature possessing a soul—he is attempting to imitate the creation of Allah, Who is the Creator of all things, the Lord of all things, and He is the One who has fashioned all
