hypocrisy—those who stay with the believers in times of prosperity and ease, yet desert them when hardship strikes. The Most High says: “Those who lie in wait for you: if you are granted a victory from Allah they say, ‘Were we not with you?’ but if the disbelievers receive a share they say, ‘Did we not gain mastery over you and shield you from the believers?’”⦗1⦘
- Visiting them, cherishing the opportunity to meet and gather with them. In a hadith qudsi it is said: “My love is incumbent upon those who visit one another for My sake.” In another report: “A man set out to visit a brother of his for the sake of Allah. Allah dispatched an angel to wait for him on the road. The angel asked, ‘Where are you heading?’ He replied, ‘To visit a brother of mine for the sake of Allah.’ The angel said, ‘Do you have any favor with him that you wish to repay?’ He answered, ‘No—only that I love him for the sake of Allah.’ The angel then said, ‘I am a messenger from Allah to tell you that Allah loves you just as you loved him for His sake.’”
- Respecting their rights: one must not sell over their sale, bid over their bid, propose marriage over their proposal, nor lay claim to something permissible that they have already secured. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Let no man sell over his brother’s sale, nor propose over his proposal,” and in another wording, “nor bid over his bidding.”
- Showing kindness to their weak and vulnerable. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “He is not one of us who does not honor our elder and show mercy to our young,” and he said, “Are you granted victory and provision except through your weak?!” The Exalted says: “And keep yourself patient with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face, and do not let your eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornment of worldly life.”⦗2⦘
- Praying for them and seeking forgiveness on their behalf. The Most High says: “And seek forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women.”⦗3⦘ And He says: “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith.”⦗4⦘
