from places of corruption, alert to the enemy’s intrigues and plots. Likewise, travelling to their lands is permissible—or even obligatory—when the purpose is to call people to Allah and spread Islam.

Among the manifestations of allegiance to the disbelievers is to aid and support them against Muslims, to praise them, or to defend them. This is one of the nullifiers of Islam and a cause of apostasy; we seek Allah’s protection from it.

Further signs of loyalty to the disbelievers include seeking their assistance1, trusting them, appointing them to posts that expose the secrets of the Muslims, and making them part of one’s inner circle or advisers.
Allah the Exalted says: “O you who believe, do not take as intimates those outside your ranks; they will spare no effort to corrupt you. They long for your suffering. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, but what their hearts conceal is greater. We have made the signs clear to you, if you would only reason. There you are—you love them while they do not love you, and you believe in the whole Scripture. When they meet you they say, ‘We believe,’ but when they are alone they bite their fingertips at you in rage. Say, ‘Perish in your rage! Allah is All-Knowing of what is hidden within hearts.’ If good fortune touches you, it grieves them; but if misfortune befalls you, they rejoice at it.”2
These noble verses lay bare the inner motives of the disbelievers, the hatred they harbour toward Muslims, the schemes and treachery they plot against them, and their eagerness to harm the believers and afflict them by every means. They exploit the confidence Muslims place in them, using it to plan harm and strike at them.
Imam Ahmad narrates from Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: “I once said to ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him), ‘I have a Christian scribe.’ He replied, ‘What is the matter with you—may Allah fight you! Have you not heard Allah’s words: O you who believe, do not take the Jews and Christians as allies; they are allies of one another3? Why did you not employ a Muslim who follows pure monotheism instead?’ I said, ‘Commander of the Believers! …’”
