if they prefer disbelief to faith. Whoever among you allies himself with them, they are indeed the wrongdoers.” 1
The Exalted also says: “You will never find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day showing affection to those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they be their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kin.” 2
Many people are ignorant of this tremendous principle. I even heard someone who claims knowledge and daʿwah, speaking on an Arabic radio station, refer to the Christians as “our brothers.” What a perilous statement!
Just as Allah, exalted is He, has forbidden loyalty to the disbelievers—the enemies of the Islamic creed—He has made it obligatory to show loyalty and love to the believers. He says: “Your only ally is Allah, His Messenger, and those who believe—those who establish the prayer and give the obligatory alms while bowing in humility. Whoever allies himself with Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, then the party of Allah—they are the triumphant.” 3 He also says: “Whoever allies himself with Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, then the party of Allah—they are the triumphant.” 4 And He says: “The believers are but brothers.” 5
Thus, the believers are brothers in religion and creed, even if their lineages, homelands, and eras are far apart. The Exalted says: “And those who came after them say, ‘Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and do not place in our hearts any rancor toward those who believe. Our Lord, You are indeed Most Kind, Most Merciful.’” 6 Accordingly, the believers—from the first of creation until the last, regardless of the distances between their lands or the length of their times—are loving brothers: the latter emulate the former, supplicate for one another, and seek forgiveness for one another.
Loyalty and disavowal have outward manifestations that attest to them:
