Fifth: Belief in what will occur on the Day of Resurrection

Imam al-Saffarini says, “Know that the Day of Standing is filled with tremendous terrors and colossal hardships—horrors that melt the livers, make nursing mothers forget their infants, and turn children’s hair grey. It is an established truth, attested to by the Qur’an and the Sunnah, and affirmed by unanimous consensus: it is the Day of Resurrection.

Scholars have differed as to why that day is called ‘yawm al-qiyāmah’ (the Day of Rising). One view is that it is because people will rise from their graves, as the Exalted says: ‘On the Day when they will emerge swiftly from the tombs’ ⦗1⦘. Another opinion is that the name is due to the events of the Gathering, the Standing, and the like that occur on that day. Yet another view is that it is named so because people will stand before the Lord of all beings, as Muslim relates in his Ṣaḥīḥ from Ibn ʿUmar—traced back to the Prophet—regarding the verse, ‘On the Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds’ ⦗2⦘; he said, ‘Each person will be standing in his perspiration up to the middle of his ears…’
