—beneath him—to grow hotter than any ember in this world; yet were the living to touch those very stones, they would feel nothing at all. More astonishing still is the scene of two adjoining graves: one a meadow from the meadows of Paradise, the other a pit of Hellfire. Not a breath of this one’s scorching heat reaches his neighbor, nor does a trace of that one’s bliss reach him. The power of Allah is broader and more wondrous than that, but human souls are prone to deny what lies beyond the range of their knowledge.
Indeed, in this very abode Allah has shown us marvels of His power far greater than that. Whenever He wills to disclose such matters to some of His servants, He discloses them, while hiding them from others. Had He unveiled them to all people, the wisdom of moral responsibility and faith in the unseen would disappear, and no one would bury the dead—just as the Prophet ﷺ said in the authentic collection: “Were it not that you would stop burying one another, I would have asked Allah to let you hear what I hear from the punishment of the grave.”
