Proofs of the Punishment of the Grave from the Prophetic Sunnah
When you consider the hadiths that speak of the punishment and bliss of the grave, you will find that they spell out in detail what the Quran has already indicated. Reports on the punishment of the grave are numerous and mutawātir (mass-transmitted) from the Prophet ﷺ. Among them are the following:
1 – In the two Ṣaḥīḥs (al-Bukhārī and Muslim) it is narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās that “the Prophet ﷺ passed by two graves and said, ‘They are being punished, yet they are not being punished for something difficult to avoid. One of them never protected himself from urine, while the other used to go about spreading malicious gossip.’ He then called for a fresh palm frond, split it in two, and placed a half on each grave, saying, ‘Perhaps their torment will be lightened for them so long as these do not dry out.’”
2 – In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Zayd ibn Thābit reported: “While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in a garden belonging to the Banū al-Najjār, riding his mule and we were with him, it suddenly shied and almost threw him. We found before us graves—six, or five, or four. He asked, ‘Who knows whose graves these are?’ A man replied, ‘I do.’ He asked, ‘When did these people die?’ He answered, ‘They died in the state of polytheism.’ He said, ‘This community will be tried in its graves. Were it not that you would stop burying one another, I would have asked Allah to let you hear some of what I am hearing from the punishment of the grave…’” (the hadith continues).
3 – In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim and all four Sunan collections, Abū Hurayrah narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said: “When any one of you finishes the final tashahhud, let him seek refuge in Allah from four things: from the punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trial of life and death, and from the trial of the Antichrist.”
4 – In the two Ṣaḥīḥs, Abū Ayyūb reported: “The Prophet ﷺ went out after the sun had set, and he heard a sound. He said, ‘The Jews are being punished in their graves.’”
5 – And in the two Ṣaḥīḥs it is narrated from ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, that she said: “An elderly Jewish woman from Medina came in to me and said, ‘The people of the graves are being punished in their graves.’”
