Third: The Ordeal of the Grave—its Punishment and its Bliss
Belief in the Last Day requires affirming everything the Prophet ﷺ has reported will occur after death. Among these matters is belief in the grave’s trial and in the punishment or bliss that follows it. Between death—which ends the first life—and the resurrection—which begins the second life, that is, between the minor resurrection and the major resurrection—the Quran at times refers to this interval as the barzakh. The Exalted says, “When death comes to any one of them, he says, ‘My Lord, send me back, that I may do righteousness in what I left behind.’ No indeed! It is only a word he utters; and behind them lies a barrier (barzakh) until the day they are resurrected” ⦗23:99-100⦘. Linguistically, barzakh signifies a barrier that separates two things.
Within this barzakh is a preview of the ultimate recompense, for it is the first station of the Hereafter: there the two angels question the deceased, after which comes either punishment or bliss.
