and: “And guard yourselves against a Day when no soul will avail another soul in the least, no intercession will be accepted from it, no ransom will be taken from it, and they will not be helped.” 1
“And fear a Day when no father can avail his child in any way, nor can a child avail his father at all. Allah’s promise is indeed true, so let not the life of this world deceive you, nor let the Deceiver deceive you about Allah.” 2
Belief in the Last Day means affirming everything that occurs after death: the torment and bliss of the grave, the resurrection that follows, the Reckoning and the Balance, reward and punishment, Paradise and Hell, and every description Allah has given of the Day of Resurrection.
It is called “the Last Day” because it comes after this worldly life, and in the Quran it is mentioned under many other names, including:
- The Day of Resurrection, because on it people will be raised to life after death.
- The Day of Emergence, because on it people will emerge from their graves into the next life.
- The Day of Standing, because on it humanity will stand for judgment.
- The Day of Recompense, because on it creation will be judged and repaid for its deeds.
- The Day of Decision, because on it Allah will decide between people with perfect justice.
- The Day of Gathering, because on it all creatures will be gathered and driven to the place of reckoning.
- The Day of Assembly, because Allah will assemble everyone for reward or punishment.
- The Day of Accounting, because on it each person will be called to account for the deeds done in this world.
- The Day of Threat, because on it Allah’s warning to the disbelievers will be fulfilled.
- The Day of Regret, because on it the disbelievers will be seized by bitter remorse.
- The Day of Eternity, because life on that Day is everlasting.
- The Hereafter Abode, because it follows the present world and is a final, lasting dwelling from which there is no onward migration.
