And the Almighty also says: “They keep their vows and dread a Day whose evil is widespread; and they give food, out of love for Him, to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, saying, ‘We feed you only for the sake of Allah; we desire from you neither reward nor thanks. Indeed, we fear from our Lord a grim, distressful Day.’ So Allah will shield them from the evil of that Day and will grant them radiance and joy.” 1
Belief in that Day likewise inspires steadfastness when confronting superior numbers and patience amid hardship. About the story of Talut (Saul) and his soldiers—when they faced an enemy far larger than themselves after crossing the river of trial, a test that only a few passed—Allah says: “When he and those who believed with him had crossed it, they said, ‘We have no strength today against Goliath and his troops.’ But those who were certain that they would meet Allah said, ‘How many a small company has overcome a large company by Allah’s permission; and Allah is with the patient.’” 2
Conversely, the absence of faith in that Day leads a person to disbelief and sin, to oppression and aggression, to tyranny and corruption. Allah says: “Indeed, those who do not expect to meet Us, who are satisfied with the life of this world and feel secure therein, and those who are heedless of Our signs—their refuge is the Fire for what they used to earn.” 3 And He says: “Indeed, those who stray from the path of Allah will have a severe punishment because they forgot the Day of Reckoning.” 4 And He says: “They were not expecting any accounting, and they flatly denied Our signs.” 5 And He says: “Have you seen the one who rejects the Judgment? That is the one who pushes away the orphan and does not encourage the feeding of the needy.” 6
Allah has commanded us to guard ourselves against that Day by preparing for it with righteous deeds that will deliver us from its terrors. He says: “And beware of a Day when you will be returned to Allah; then every soul will be paid in full for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged.” 7 and: “And beware of a Day when no soul will…”
