in Allah, His angels, His scriptures, His messengers, and the Last Day, just as mentioned in the ḥadith of ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—concerning Gabriel’s questions to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
At other times the Qur’an pairs belief in the Last Day solely with belief in Allah, as in His words: “Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day” 1, and: “O you who believe, do not nullify your charities with reminders of generosity or injury, like the one who spends his wealth to be seen by people yet does not believe in Allah and the Last Day” 2.
Allah has given this Day many names, to underscore its gravity and alert His servants so that they fear it. He called it “the Last Day” because it follows this worldly life and nothing comes after it; “the Day of Resurrection” because people will rise to stand before their Lord; and He named it al-Wāqiʿah (the Event), al-Ḥāqqah (the Inevitable), al-Qāriʿah (the Striker), al-Rājifah (the Quake), al-Ṣākhkhah (the Deafening Blast), al-Āzifah (the Approaching), the Great Terror, the Day of Reckoning, the Day of Recompense, and the True Promise…
All of these names point to the magnitude of the Day, the severity of its horrors, and what people will face of dread and hardship. It is a Day when eyes will stare in terror and hearts will leap from their chests up to their throats: “On the Day when a man will flee from his brother, his mother and his father, his spouse and his children; every one of them that Day will have a matter to occupy him” 3; and, “On the Day when the sky will be like molten brass and the mountains like tufts of wool, no close friend will ask about a close friend, though they will be made to see each other. The criminal will long to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day with his own children, his spouse, his brother, his clan that sheltered him, and everyone on earth together, if only he could be saved” 4.
Belief in this Day spurs a person to act and to prepare for it, as He says: “Whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do righteous deeds and associate none in the worship of his Lord” 5; and: “Seek help through patience and prayer; it is indeed difficult, except for those who are humbly submissive—those who know they will meet their Lord and that to Him they will return” 6.
