but when the appointed time for the barrier’s collapse arrives, Allah will level it with the ground—an irrevocable promise. Once it is demolished, they will pour out upon mankind, surging and streaming forth—meaning, they will hurry down from every hillside. The blowing of the Trumpet will follow shortly thereafter.
As for the proof from the Sunnah, it is found in Sahih Muslim in the narration of al-Nawwas ibn Samʿan (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah will reveal to Jesus son of Mary (peace be upon him), after he has slain the Antichrist, ‘I have released servants of Mine whom no one can withstand in battle; so take My servants to safety on the Mount.’ Allah will then send forth Gog and Magog, and they will rush down from every slope. The first of them will pass by the Lake of Tiberias and drink it dry; when the last of them pass, they will say, ‘There used to be water here.’ They will besiege Jesus and his companions until the head of an ox becomes dearer to one of them than 100 dinars…”—and the report continues.
In the hadith of Hudhayfah recorded by al-Tabarani we read: “Allah will bar them from Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem.”
Imam al-Nawawi said, “According to the majority of scholars they are descendants of Adam.”
Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr stated, “There is consensus that they are from the progeny of Yafith, son of Noah (peace be upon him).”
The learned al-Saffarini quoted Ibn Kathir as saying, “Gog and Magog are two groups of the Turks, descendants of Adam.” He then added, “They are from the descendants of Noah, through the line of Yafith, the forefather of the Turks.”
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also informed us of the nearness of their emergence and warned us about them. In the two Sahih collections, Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Today an opening the size of this has been made in the barrier of Gog and Magog,” and he formed a circle with his fingers.
