The Wisdom Behind the Sealing of Prophethood with Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him.
Muhammad’s prophethood marked the end of all prophethoods, for he was sent to all people until the Day of Resurrection. The Almighty says, “We have sent you only as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner to all mankind” 1; “We have sent you only as a mercy to the worlds” 2; “Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion to His servant, that he might be a warner to all the worlds” 3; and, “Say: O people, I am the Messenger of Allah to you all” 4.
Because his mission is universal, his law must necessarily be perfect and comprehensive, sufficient for all human interests, leaving no need for a new law or a further prophet. Allah the Exalted says, “Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and chosen Islam for you as the religion” 5; “We have sent down to you the Book as an explanation of all things, and as guidance, mercy, and glad tidings for the Muslims” 6; and, “We have revealed to you the Book in truth, confirming the Scriptures that came before it and as a guardian over them” 7.
Shaykh Abul-Aʿla Mawdudi, in his work Refutation of the Qadianis, writes: “When we examine the Qur’an in order to discover the reasons that made it necessary to send a prophet to any nation on earth, we find that those reasons are four:
1 A nation to which no prophet from Allah had previously been sent, and to which the teachings of a prophet sent elsewhere could not possibly reach.
2 A nation to which a prophet had indeed been sent, but whose teaching had been effaced, or corrupted by the hands of forgetfulness and alteration, so that the people could no longer follow it in a sound and complete manner.
3 A nation to which a prophet had been sent, yet his teachings were not comprehensive enough for those who would come after him, nor sufficient for the demands of their era, so that the need arose for additional prophets
