Among them is the prohibition of zakat for him and for his family. Among them is that continuous fasting—al-wisal—was made lawful for him, and he was allowed to have more than four wives. Among them is that fighting in Mecca was permitted for him. Among them is that he leaves no estate to be inherited. Among them is that his wives remain his wives after his death, and if he divorces a woman she remains forbidden to others, so she may not marry … and there are many other prophetic privileges besides these.
Let us now speak about three of the greatest distinctions of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: the Night Journey and Ascension, the universality of his message, and the sealing of prophethood with him ﷺ.
- The Night Journey and Ascension
Allah, Exalted, says: “Glory be to the One who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed, so that We might show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He alone is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.” 1
Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy on him, commented on this noble verse: “The Most High glorifies Himself and magnifies His majesty for His power to accomplish what no one else can; there is no god but He, no Lord besides Him. ‘Who took His servant’—that is, Muhammad ﷺ—‘by night,’ meaning in the depth of the night, ‘from the Sacred Mosque,’ the mosque of Mecca, ‘to the Farthest Mosque,’ the Temple in Jerusalem that lies in Ilia, the dwelling place of the prophets since Abraham the Friend, peace be upon him. For that reason they were all gathered there for him; he led them in prayer in their own homeland, indicating that he is the supreme imam and foremost leader, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him and upon them all. His words, ‘whose surroundings We have blessed,’ that is, with crops and fruits. ‘So that We might show him’—that is, Muhammad—‘some of Our signs,’ the mighty signs, just as He says: ‘Indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord’ 2. ‘Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing’ 3—He hears the words of His servants, believer and disbeliever, affirmer and denier, and He sees them; He grants each of them what he deserves in this world and the Hereafter.” End of quote.
