Innate human nature and sound reason agree with everything the prophets brought, whereas magicians, soothsayers, pretenders, and other impostors run counter to the evidences of revelation, reason, and the inherent disposition.
-
The prophets came with matters that refine and complete both the fitrah and the intellect, while magicians, diviners, and liars introduce things that spoil the mind and corrupt the natural disposition.

The prophets’ miracles are never the product of their own power; God alone brings them into existence as signs attesting to their truth—such as the splitting of the moon, the staff turning into a live serpent, the revelation of the Quran, or informing people of unseen matters known only to God. The entire affair of miracles thus lies with God, not with the choice of any creature. Concerning those who demanded a sign, God said: “Say: The signs are only with God; I am but a plain warner.” 1
By contrast, the extraordinary feats of magicians and soothsayers, as well as modern technological innovations, all result from human endeavor.
In sum, the distinctions between the prophets’ signs and the wonders of diviners are numerous and evident. Whoever desires further detail should consult Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah’s work al-Nubuwwāt.
