Moreover, every truthful claimant to prophethood has always been marked by manifest knowledge, integrity, piety, and all manner of goodness—qualities obvious to anyone with the slightest discernment. A messenger must necessarily convey certain truths, command certain deeds, and himself perform certain acts; and from the very things a liar proclaims, commands, and does, many signs of falsehood become apparent.
Someone may then ask about the difference between the proofs of prophethood, the extraordinary feats of magicians and soothsayers, and the remarkable new inventions we witness today.
The answer is that there are many distinctions between prophetic evidences and the wonders produced by magicians, diviners, or industry:
-
The prophets’ reports never fail and never contain error. By contrast, the statements of soothsayers and astrologers are usually lies. They may stumble upon the truth now and then because their spirits gain a scrap of information when their devils steal a hearing from the heavens, but deception remains the norm.
-
Sorcery, divination, and technological invention are familiar, customary pursuits that people acquire through effort and study; they lie within the power of both human beings and jinn, and others can replicate them. The signs granted to the prophets, however, are beyond the reach of every creature. God says, “Say: If mankind and the jinn were to band together to produce the like of this Quran, they could never produce its like, even if they assisted one another wholeheartedly” ⦗1⦘. Hence prophetic signs are not wrought by created beings; God alone brings them forth as tokens of His messengers’ truth—such as the splitting of the moon, the staff turning into a living serpent, pebbles audibly glorifying God, the palm-trunk’s yearning groan, and the multiplication of scant water or food. None of this is possible except by God’s act.

Prophets are believing Muslims: they worship God alone as He has commanded and affirm everything revealed through all the prophets. Magicians, soothsayers, and lying pretenders to prophethood, by contrast, are invariably idolaters who deny part of what God has sent down.
