the Khuzāʿī, the teacher of al-Bukhārī, who said: “Whoever likens Allah to His creation has fallen into disbelief, and whoever rejects what Allah has described Himself with has likewise disbelieved. In the descriptions Allah has given of Himself, and those conveyed by His Messenger, there is no anthropomorphism at all. Thus, whoever affirms for Allah whatever is stated in the unambiguous verses and the sound reports, in a manner befitting His majesty, while declaring Him above every deficiency, has indeed taken the path of guidance….” End quote.
This is the creed of the Salaf concerning Allah’s names and attributes: to affirm them exactly as they appear in the Qur’an and the Sunnah, without likening them to the attributes of created beings and without stripping them away or denying them. It is affirmation without anthropomorphism and exaltation of Allah without negation, in accordance with His words, “There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.”⦗1⦘ Whoever claims that the way of the early generations was to consign the meanings altogether to Allah (tafwīḍ) has lied about them, fabricated against them, and accused them of what they are completely innocent.
We ask Allah for pardon and well-being.
