Introduction
Know, O Muslim—may Allah grant success to both you and me—that the foundations of the Islamic creed, the creed of the Saved Sect, Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamaʿah, are: faith in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, the Last Day, and faith in divine decree, its good and its bad.
These fundamentals are established by many texts from the Quran and the Sunnah, and the entire Ummah is unanimous about them.
Allah, Exalted is He, says: “Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west; rather, true righteousness is for one to believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets.” 1
He also says: “Indeed, We have created everything according to a preordained measure.” 2
And He says: “The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. Each of them believes in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers; we make no distinction between any of His messengers.” 3
He further states: “Whoever disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, and the Last Day has certainly strayed far into error.” 4
In the authentic hadith the Prophet ﷺ said: “Iman is to believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in divine decree, both its good and its evil.”
