—and the Maturidis! O servants of Allah, can such a person truly be regarded as one who believes in Allah, His Book, and the Sunnah of His Messenger? Does he really venerate his Lord? Exalted are You; this is a monstrous slander.
Fourth: Just as Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah affirm for Allah the attributes He has affirmed for Himself—or that His Messenger has affirmed for Him—in a manner befitting His majesty and without likening Him to His creation, they likewise declare Him far above every defect and flaw. Yet their declaration of transcendence never leads them to nullify those attributes by re-interpreting their meanings or distorting their wording under the guise of transcendence. Their creed thus strikes a middle course between the two extremes of anthropomorphism and negation: they avoid negation when proclaiming His transcendence, and they avoid anthropomorphism when affirming His attributes.
Fifth: The method of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah in both affirming Allah’s attributes and denying any imperfection about Him is the very method taught by the Book and the Sunnah—generality in negation and detail in affirmation. Allah says, “There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing” ⦗1⦘. Here the negation is general—“There is nothing like unto Him”—while the affirmation is specific—“and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.”
Every negation regarding Allah’s attributes implicitly affirms perfection; it is not sheer negation, for bare negation contains no praise, being mere absence. Among the examples of such negation that conveys perfection are His words: “And your Lord does not wrong anyone” ⦗2⦘—that is, because His justice is perfect; “and neither does preserving them fatigue Him” ⦗3⦘—that is, because His power and strength are perfect; and, “Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep” ⦗4⦘—that is, because His life and His sustaining of all things are perfect. Thus every negation about Allah carries with it an affirmation of the opposite quality of absolute perfection and majesty.
We therefore ask Allah to grant us insight into His religion, to enable us to obey Him, to recognize the truth, and to act upon it.
