Indeed, calling people to this creed is the very foundation and point of departure; no one is to be summoned to anything else—whether fulfilling obligations or avoiding prohibitions—until this creed is firmly established and realized. It is the cornerstone that validates all deeds, and without it actions are invalid, unaccepted, and unrewarded.
It is self-evident that no structure can stand upright before its foundations are laid. For that reason the messengers gave precedence to the creed above all else, and whenever the Prophet ﷺ dispatched missionaries he would instruct them to begin by rectifying belief. Ibn ʿAbbās (d. 68 AH) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Muʿādh to Yemen he said to him, “You are going to a people from among the People of the Book; let the very first thing you call them to be the testimony that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.” In another wording: “that they single out Allah alone in worship. If they respond to you in that, then inform them that Allah has made five prayers obligatory upon them each day and night. If they respond to that, then inform them that Allah has prescribed a charity to be taken from their rich and returned to their poor. If they comply with that, then beware of taking the best of their wealth, and guard yourself against the supplication of the oppressed, for there is no veil between it and Allah.” Reported by al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
From this noble hadith, from surveying the missions of the messengers in the Quran, and from examining the Prophet’s biography, it is clear that calling to Allah begins with inviting people to the creed—worshipping Allah alone with no partner and abandoning the worship of anything else—which is the very meaning of “La ilaha illa Allah.”
The Prophet ﷺ spent thirteen years in Mecca after his commissioning, summoning people to correct their creed—worshipping Allah alone and renouncing idols—before he commanded prayer, almsgiving, fasting, pilgrimage, jihad, and abstention from prohibitions such as usury, fornication, wine, and gambling.
This provides unmistakable evidence of the error of certain contemporary groups that
