al-Ajwibah al-Nafiah an Asilat Lajnat Masjid al-JamiahNasir al-Din al-Albani

Muslim relates this report (3/13) and so do others.

It is corroborated by a narration from Sahl ibn Saʿd to the same purport, which states: “He pointed with the index finger and clasped the middle finger with the thumb.” Abu Dawud transmitted it with a good chain, and both reports are cited in Irwāʾ (3/77).

When the worshippers had gathered, he would emerge to deliver the sermon by himself, with no curtain or attendant before him, and it was never his practice to wear a scarf, a Persian mantle, or the customary black cloak.

Whenever he entered the mosque he greeted those present; then, upon mounting the pulpit, he would turn to face the congregation, greet them a second time, and sit down.¹

(1) I note that this procedure—combining the salutation of peace (salam) on entering with another salam after mounting the pulpit—is not attested in the Sunnah as far as I know. I later located it only in a weak hadith, which I documented in Silsilat al-ahadith al-daifa wa-l-mawdua, no. 4194. What is reliably established is merely the second greeting. Elsewhere (p. 24) the author writes: “Reports transmitting that the Prophet saluted those present before beginning the khutba come through several chains that mutually reinforce one another.”
