al-Ajwibah al-Nafiah an Asilat Lajnat Masjid al-JamiahNasir al-Din al-Albani

In another version recorded by Muslim he said, “Whomever Allah guides, none can lead astray; and whomever He lets go astray, none can guide.” 1

Al-Nasāʾī transmits from Jābir that, after declaring, “Every innovation is misguidance,” the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, added, “and every misguidance is in the Fire.” 2

The phrase “every innovation is misguidance” means that its originator is misguided. Linguistically, a bidʿah is anything produced without a precedent; in the present context it refers to any practice introduced without prior sanction from the Book or the Sunnah.

The hadith therefore proves that every innovation is a deviation and that the Prophet’s words are not a general statement later qualified, as some have alleged.

(1) This passage forms part of the khutbat al-hajah (the introductory supplication) that the Prophet taught his Companions; it is prescribed to precede every sermon, especially the Friday khutbah. I have published a separate booklet on the khutbat al-hajah. (2) Its isnad is sound, and al-Bayhaqi also reports it in Al-Asmaʾ wa-al-Sifat.
