such-and-such. The most that can be inferred, then, is that the sermon delivered before the Friday prayer is an emphatically recommended sunnah, not an obligation, much less a condition for the prayer’s validity. From an action that the Prophet ﷺ performed consistently we learn recommendation, not obligation; its constancy merely shows that it is a confirmed sunnah. Therefore, the Friday sermon is a firmly established sunnah and a distinctive emblem of Islam—never abandoned from the day it was legislated until the Prophet’s passing, peace and blessings be upon him.1
(1) I say: This statement involves some self-contradiction and a clear departure from what is correct, which must be pointed out. At the beginning of the discussion the author said that Allah commanded people to hurry to the remembrance of Allah, and that the khutba (sermon) is part of that remembrance if it is not the primary object meant by it. If that is so, the divine command regarding the khutba is already established in the Quran, so there is no further need for a Sunnah text; and the command to hurry toward it necessarily entails a command to perform it a fortiori, for the act of hastening is only a means to the khutba. When the means is obligatory, the end sought is even more obviously obligatory. The author himself uses this very argument to prove that the two Eid prayers are obligatory, relying on the authentic report that the Prophet ﷺ ordered people to go out for the Eid prayer. The author (p. 42) says: “The command to go out implies a command to perform the prayer for anyone who has no excuse, by implication of the wording (fahwa al-khitab), because going out is a means to it, and when the means is obligatory the end it serves is likewise obligatory …”
