Be aware that the ḥadith, “When any one of you comes to the Friday congregation, let him perform ghusl,” indicates that the ghusl is legislated specifically for the Friday prayer. Whoever bathes for some other purpose does not obtain the prescribed reward, whether he does so at the beginning, middle, or end of the day.
This is further corroborated by the report transmitted by Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Ḥibbān, and others—traced back to the Prophet—which states: “Whoever comes to the Friday congregation, whether men or women, let him perform ghusl.” Ibn Khuzaymah adds:
Had those reports been sound, they would still contain neither a decisive text nor any proof that the Friday ghusl is not wajib; they merely state that performing wudu is a commendable act and that ghusl is superior—and this is undisputed. Allah Most High has said: “If the People of the Book had believed, it would surely have been better for them” (Q 3:110). Does this wording indicate that faith and taqwa are not obligatory? God forbid. Moreover, even if all of those hadiths together did provide an explicit statement that the Friday ghusl is not obligatory, that would prove nothing, for it would accord only with the legal situation that existed before the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, declared: “The ghusl of Friday is wajib upon every person who has reached puberty.” This pronouncement is an additional ruling that certainly abrogates the earlier state; it is impermissible to abandon what is undoubtedly nasikh (abrogating) and to act upon what is mansukh (abrogated).
