How one “catches” the Friday prayer:
6 – Al-Nasa’i transmitted, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, the wording:
“Whoever catches one rak‘ah of the Friday prayer has caught the Friday prayer.”
This hadith comes through twelve chains, of which al-Hakim declared three authentic. In al-Badr al-Munir he remarked:
“These three chains are the best routes for this hadith, and the rest are weak.”
It was likewise reported by al-Nasa’i, Ibn Majah, and al-Daraqutni from Ibn ‘Umar, and that version also has several chains.
Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar stated in Bulugh al-Maram: “Its isnad is sound, but Abu Hatim considered its mursal form stronger.”¹
perform only two rakʿas as Jumuʿa has contravened these evidences without any proof.
I later noticed that al-Sanʿani, 2/74, says the same: if the Friday prayer is missed, performing dhuhr is obligatory by consensus, for it serves as its substitute; he adds that he has treated the matter in a separate monograph.
(1) The original text read “wa-aqarra” (and he affirmed), which is incorrect; I have emended it to “dhakara” (mentioned) based on Bulugh al-Maram.
