that the same ruling would have to extend to all five daily prayers¹, such that no congregational prayer would be valid in any location where the Prophet ﷺ had not explicitly permitted a congregation—and that is one of the most blatant falsehoods. If, instead, the verdict is that the latter of the two Friday prayers²—when the sequence is known—or both of them, when it is uncertain, should be declared invalid on account of some newly arisen impediment, then what exactly is that impediment? The default principle is that devotional rulings remain valid at every time and in every place unless evidence establishes a prohibition, and in this case there is absolutely no such evidence³.

1) I add: The same argument applies to the two Eid prayers, and the requirement is even stronger there, for it is known that the Messenger of Allah would perform the Eid prayer in Madinah in only one place—the open-air musalla—yet no one claimed that holding more than one Eid congregation is forbidden. 2) I add: As for the saying that has become widespread in our times, “The Friday prayer goes to whoever arrives first,” it has no basis in the Sunnah and is not a hadith. It is merely an opinion ascribed to some Shafi‘i jurists that people without knowledge mistook for prophetic tradition.
