Since that is the case, persisting with ʿUthmān’s additional call would now be mere duplication—a redundant act that is not permissible, especially in a matter that amounts to adding to the law of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ without a valid cause. For this very reason, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib—may Allah be pleased with him—while in Kūfah, confined himself to the original practice and did not adopt ʿUthmān’s addition, as al-Qurṭubī relates.
Ibn ʿUmar said:
“Whenever the Prophet ﷺ ascended the pulpit, Bilāl gave the adhan; when the Prophet ﷺ finished his sermon, he pronounced the iqāmah. The first adhan is an innovation.”
This was narrated by Abū Tāhir al-Mukhlis in his Fawāʾid (folio 229/1-2).
In short, we maintain that the single adhan established by the Prophet is sufficient and that it should be given when the imam emerges and mounts the pulpit, now that the reason which once justified ʿUthmān’s extra call no longer exists. This is in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
