—one that addresses every single believer, as in His statement: “O you who believe, when the call is made for prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah” (Surah al-Jumʿah, 62:9). This verse is an evident and conclusive proof.
Abu Dawud has also transmitted—on the authority of Tariq ibn Shihab—that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The Friday prayer is a binding duty upon every Muslim in congregation,1 except for four: a slave in bondage, a woman, a child, and one who is ill.” More than one eminent hadith scholar has declared this report authentic.
(2) …this is likewise the position adopted by the Hanafi school and others; the prayer must therefore be given full attention, and it is impermissible to show laziness or be distracted from it.
(1) The additional phrase “the exhortation” is missing from the base manuscript, yet it is firmly attested in Abu Dawud (no. 1067). The author also cites it in al-Rawdah 1/134 through Abu Dawud with this very wording, and its significance will become clear under Issue 3.
