refers back to his words, “and he would pray two rakʿahs after Jumuʿah in his house.” This is confirmed by the narration of al-Layth from Nāfiʿ, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said: “Whenever he had performed the Jumuʿah prayer he would leave and prostrate for two rakʿahs in his house, and then he would say, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do the same.’” Muslim recorded it.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ adds:
As for the statement, “He used to lengthen the prayer before Jumuʿah,” if what is meant is that this occurred after the time for Jumuʿah had begun, then it cannot be traced back to the Prophet ﷺ, for he would come out once the sun had passed the zenith, deliver the sermon, and then lead the Jumuʿah prayer. If, however, what is meant is that it was done before the time had entered, then it is merely an unfixed voluntary prayer, not an established sunnah attached to Jumuʿah; hence it offers no proof for a prescribed sunnah before the Friday prayer. It is simply a general supererogatory act, the encouragement for which has already been cited in the ḥadīth of Salmān and others, wherein he said, “then he prays whatever has been written for him.”
Permissibility of praying before the sun reaches its zenith on Friday:
The wording of the ḥadīth of Salmān just alluded to by al-Ḥāfiẓ is found in al-Bukhārī:
