Response to the First Point
- We do not deem it correct to follow what ʿUthmān (may Allah be pleased with him) did in an absolute and unrestricted way. As has already been made clear, he only introduced the first adhan for a sound reason: the great number of worshippers and the distance of their homes from the Prophet’s Mosque. Whoever disregards this reason and clings to ʿUthmān’s additional adhan without qualification is not truly following him; rather, he is opposing ʿUthmān—and, more gravely, adding to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Sunnah of the two caliphs who came after him.
When Is the ʿUthmānī Adhan Prescribed?
Accordingly, genuine adherence to ʿUthmān’s practice is warranted only when the very circumstance that led him to add the first adhan is present—namely, a large congregation and the remoteness of their residences from the mosque, as explained above.
As for the questioner’s suggestion of another rationale in addition to large numbers, conveyed in his words: “and they became absorbed in the pursuit of …”
