d) Reported by Bilāl al-ʿAbsi:
“ʿAmmār led the people in the Friday prayer while the congregation was split into two groups—some saying, ‘The sun has passed its zenith,’ and others saying, ‘It has not yet passed.’”
Ibn Abī Shaybah transmitted it with a sound chain.
e) From Abū Razīn, who said:
“We used to perform the Friday prayer with ʿAlī; sometimes we found shade, and at other times we did not.”
Ibn Abī Shaybah narrated it, and its chain is sound according to Muslim’s criteria.
I say: These two reports together demonstrate the legitimacy of both options—performing the Friday prayer before the sun reaches its zenith and after it—as is plainly evident⦗1⦘.
(1) As for the statement of al-Hafiz: “This should be understood either as hastening to pray immediately after the sun passes the zenith or as delaying it slightly; yet the weakness of this view is plain, for Abu Razin is describing what they actually witnessed, namely that they found no shade after the Friday prayer—even though it had been preceded by the sermon and the call to prayer.”
