Hadiths Concerning the Later Time

As for the later time, several reports address it:

A – Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ said, “We used to perform the Friday prayer¹ with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, once the sun had started to decline, and then we would return and follow the shade.” Reported by al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others, and by Ibn Abī Shaybah in al-Muṣannaf (1/207/1).

B – Anas related that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would pray the Friday prayer when the sun inclined from the meridian. Reported by al-Bukhari and others.

noting that the sun’s decline (zawal) occurs at the end of the sixth hour and the beginning of the seventh. The hadith therefore implies that the imam should emerge at the very start of the sixth hour, which would place his appearance before the sun has declined; this, then, deserves further thought. Ibn Hajar replies to this objection, as explained in his Fath al-Bari 2/294; whoever wishes may consult it. (1) That is, he goes out to perform the Friday prayer.
