62 – The preacher raising his hands during supplication.¹
63 – The congregation raising their hands, saying “Āmīn” in response to his supplication.² (al-Bāʿith, 64–65)
64 – Consistently closing the sermon with the Almighty’s words, “Indeed, Allah commands justice and excellence,” or with His words, “Remember Allah and He will remember you….” (al-Madkhal, 2/271; al-Sunan, 57)
65 – Lengthening the sermon while shortening the prayer.³
(1) Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya says in al-Ikhtiyarat al-Ilmiyya, p. 48: “It is disliked for the imam to raise his hands while making supplication during the sermon, for the Prophet ﷺ would only point with his two fingers when he prayed.”
(2) I note that Ibn Abidin states in his Hashiya, 1/768, that if the imam nevertheless does so he is, according to the sound view, guilty of sin.
(3) I further note that the sunnah is to keep the prayer long and the sermon short, as mentioned above on p. 100; doing the opposite, which is the common practice of most preachers today, is undoubtedly a bidʿa (reprehensible innovation).
Al-Durr al-Mukhtar, 1/758, with its commentary, states: “It is disliked for the two Friday sermons to exceed the length of a surah from the long mufassal section of the Quran.”
