B – Abu Masʿūd, ʿUqbah ibn ʿAmr, reported that a man once prepared a meal for him and invited him. He asked, ‘Does the house contain an image?’ The man replied, ‘Yes.’ He therefore refused to enter until the image was broken; only then did he go in.⦗2⦘
C – Imam al-Awzaʿī said:
(1) Reported by al-Bayhaqi with a sound chain. Umar’s statement provides clear evidence that it is wrong for certain shaykhs to attend churches filled with images and statues merely to satisfy the wishes of officials or others. Worse still, they hear words of disbelief and deviation from some speakers there—who may even be Muslims—yet they remain silent, failing to proclaim the ruling of the sharia that they know. One hears slogans such as: “There is no difference between a Muslim and a Christian,” “Religion is for God and the homeland is for everyone,” and even declarations of martyrdom for people who are not Muslims, though they are aware that a Muslim himself is not deemed a martyr except under well-known conditions. These and similar violations can only make us say: inna lillah wa-inna ilayhi rajiun (We belong to Allah and to Him we return).
(2) Al-Bayhaqi also transmits it with a sound chain, as Ibn Hajar notes in Fath al-Bari 9/204; Abu Bakr al-Marwazi cites it in Kitab al-Waraʿ 20/1.
