Adab al-Zifaf fi al-Sunnah al-MutahharahNasir al-Din al-Albani

The second: “The voluntary faster is in command of himself; if he wishes, he may keep the fast, and if he wishes, he may break it.” 1.

(1) Al-Nasaʾi records it in al-Kubra 2/64, as do al-Hakim 1/439 and al-Bayhaqi 4/276, through the chain Simak b. Harb → Abu Salih → Umm Hani, raised to the Prophet. Al-Hakim declared the chain “sound (sahih),” and al-Dhahabi agreed. Their judgment is correct, for Simak is not the sole transmitter: Shuʿba also related it, saying, “Jada narrated to me from Umm Hani.” Shuʿba added, “I asked Jada, ‘Did you hear it directly from Umm Hani?’ He replied, ‘Our family informed me,’” and Abu Salih, the client of Umm Hani, likewise narrated it from her. Al-Daraqutni cites it in al-Afrad, vol. 2, nos. 30–31 (in the two copies I consulted), as do al-Bayhaqi, Ahmad 6/341, and Ibn ʿAdi in al-Kamil 2/59; this provides another route that reinforces the first. A third route is given by Abu Dawud, via Yazid b. Abi Ziyad → ʿAbd Allah b. al-Harith → Umm Hani with similar wording. This isnad is strong as corroborative evidence, and al-Hafiz al-ʿIraqi said in
