- The Permissibility of a Wedding Banquet Without Meat
It is permissible to offer the wedding banquet with whatever food is easily available, even if it contains no meat. This is based on the report of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
“The Prophet ﷺ stayed between Khaybar and Medina for three nights while consummating his marriage with Safiyyah. I invited the Muslims to his wedding banquet, and there was neither bread nor meat in it. All that was served was that he ordered some leather mats(1) to be spread out—in another narration, the ground was cleared into small hollows(2)—the mats were then placed, and dates, dried curd, and clarified butter were poured over them, whereupon the people ate to their fill.” 3.
(1) Plural of nitaʿ—a mat or carpet made from adim (tanned leather).
(2) Plural of afhus al-qataʿ; it designates the shallow hollow where the sand-grouse squats and lays its eggs, as though it scrapes the soil away. The root fahs conveys the idea of probing or uncovering (Nihaya).
(3) Reported by al-Bukhari 7/387 (his wording is followed here); by Muslim 4/147, who also transmits the alternate version with the additional phrase; by al-Nasaʾi 2/93; by al-Bayhaqi 7/259; and by Ahmad 3/259, 264, who likewise preserves the second version with the extra wording.
٢٦- جواز الوليمة بغير لحم:
ويجوز أن تؤدى الوليمة بأي طعام تيسر ولم لم يكن فيه لحم لحديث أنس ﵁ قال:
"أقام النبي ﷺ بين خيبر والمدينة ثلاث ليال يبني عليه بصفية فدعوت المسلمين إلى وليمته وما كان فيها من خبز ولا لحم وما كان فيها إلا أن أمر بالأنطاع١ فبسطت وفي رواية: فحصت الأرض أفاحيص٢ وجيء بالأنطاع فوضعت فيها فألقي عليها التمر والأقط والسمن [فشبع الناس] "٣.

٢ جمع أفحوص القطاة وهو موضعها الذي تجثم فيه وتبيض كأنها تفحص عنه التراب أي: تكشفه والفحص: البحث والكشف. "نهاية".
