Adab al-Zifaf fi al-Sunnah al-MutahharahNasir al-Din al-Albani

“…‘What is this?1’

He said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I have married a woman from among the Ansar.’

The Prophet asked, ‘How much did you give her as a dowry?’

He replied, ‘The weight of a date-stone2…’”

(1) That is, “What is the matter with you?” or “What is this?”—an interrogative particle that remains indeclinable; see Fath al-Bari. (2) Ibn al-Athir states in al-Nihaya: “The term nawāh designates five dirhams. Al-Azhari adds: The wording of the hadith shows that he married the woman for gold worth five dirhams, because it says: ‘a nawāh of gold.’ ” Ibn Hajar relates the same view on the authority of most scholars in Fath al-Bari, 9/192. Note: In some chains of the hadith, Anas explains nawāh by saying, “We estimated it at a quarter dinar.” Al-Tabarani records this in al-Awsat, 1/131/2 (supplementary narrations); the isnad contains Muammar ibn Sahl, for whom I have found no biographical entry. As for al-Haythami’s statement, 4/52: =
