- The Prohibition of Publicizing Marital Intimacies
It is forbidden for either spouse to disclose the secrets that pertain to their sexual relations. Two hadiths address this matter:
First: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
“Among the most wicked of people in Allah’s sight on the Day of Resurrection is a man who has intimacy¹ with his wife and she with him, and then exposes her secret.” ²
(1) That is, the ruling applies when one actually reaches her through direct physical contact and sexual intercourse; cf. the Qur’anic phrase, “wa-qad afda ba‘dukum ila ba‘d” (4:21), “when you have already been intimate with one another.”
(2) Reported by Ibn Abi Shayba, 7/67/1; by way of his chain in Muslim, 4/157; Ahmad, 3/69; Abu Nu‘aym, 10/236–237; Ibn al-Sunni, no. 608; and al-Bayhaqi, 7/193–194, all on the authority of Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri.
I later added a corrective note: although the hadith appears in Sahih Muslim, its chain is weak because it contains ‘Umar b. Hamza al-‘Umari, whom al-Tahdhib grades as unreliable. Al-Dhahabi likewise remarks in al-Mizan: “Yahya b. Ma‘in and al-Nasa’i declared him weak, and Ahmad said, ‘his reports are…’”
