Second: On the authority of Umm al-Dardaʾ (may Allah be pleased with her), who said:
“I had just come out of the bathhouse when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) met me and asked, ‘From where, O Umm al-Dardaʾ?’ I replied, ‘From the bathhouse.’ He then said, ‘By the One in Whose hand is my soul, no woman removes her clothes in a place other than one of her mothers’ houses except that she tears away every veil between herself and the Most Merciful.’ 1
from Abu al-Zubayr, on the authority of Jabir. Al-Hakim ruled: “Sound according to Muslim’s criteria,” a judgment with which al-Dhahabi agreed, and al-Tirmidhi classified it as “hasan.” Numerous corroborating reports are listed in al-Mundhiri’s Targhib wa-Tarhib, 1/89–91. It was also narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Awsat, 10–11 of its Zawaid, by al-Baghundi in Musnad Umar, p. 13, by al-Tabarani as well from Abu Ayyub, Abu Saʿid, and Ibn ʿUmar, and by Ibn ʿAsakir, 4/303/2, from Abu Hurayrah.
(1) Reported by Ahmad, 6/361–362, and by al-Dulabi, 2/134, through two chains from her, one of which is sound; al-Mundhiri considered it reliable.
This hadith demonstrates that bathhouses (hammam) were already known in the Hijaz. As for the wording found in some narrations, “The lands of the non-Arabs will be opened to you and you will find houses called hammam…,” its isnad is not authentic, as indicated in the Takhrij al-Halal wa-l-Haram, no. 192; besides, the wording is not an explicit negation—reflect on this.
