“O Allah, I ask You for the goodness that is within her and the goodness upon which You have fashioned her, and I seek refuge in You from her evil and the evil upon which You have fashioned her.” 1
[And if he purchases a camel, let him grasp the tip of its hump and say the same supplication.] 2
(1) i.e. You created it and ingrained it in him (al-Nihaya). I add: The hadith shows that Allah is the creator of both good and evil, contrary to the Mu‘tazila and others who claim that evil is not His creation. Affirming that Allah creates evil does not diminish His perfection; rather, it forms part of it. A detailed discussion appears in Ibn al-Qayyim’s Shifa al-ʿAlil fi al-qadaʾ wa-l-qadar wa-t-taʿlil. Anyone who wishes may refer to it. May this supplication be used when purchasing something like a car? My answer: yes, because of the hoped-for benefit and the feared harm.
(2) Reported by al-Bukhari, Afʿal al-ʿIbad, p. 77; Abu Dawud, 1/336; Ibn Majah, 1/592; al-Hakim, 2/185; al-Bayhaqi, 7/148; and Abu Yaʿla, Musnad, fol. 308/2, with a sound chain. Al-Hakim declared it sahih and al-Dhahabi concurred. Al-Iraqi stated in Takhrij al-Ihya, 1/298: “Its isnad is good.” ʿAbd al-Haqq al-Ishbili and Ibn Daqiq al-ʿId likewise affirmed its soundness.
