19 – The preferable course is to forgo withdrawal (ʿazl).
Yet abstaining from it is preferable for several reasons:
First: it harms the wife because it deprives her of her pleasure.2 If she nevertheless consents, the following concern remains:
Second: it frustrates one of the chief aims of marriage—namely, increasing the numbers of the community of our Prophet ﷺ—as indicated by his words ﷺ:
“Marry affectionate, fertile women, for I will boast of your numbers before the other nations.”4
(1) Reported by Muslim 4/160; Abu Dawud 1/339; al-Bayhaqi 7/229; and Ahmad 3/312, 386.
(2) Cited by Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari.
(3) That is: “Through your numbers I will surpass the earlier nations.” This explains the instruction to marry a wife who is both walud (fertile) and wadud (affectionate): if she is affectionate but not fertile, men will not be inclined toward her, and if she is fertile but not affectionate, the intended purpose is not achieved. See Fayd al-Qadir.
