or perform tayammum.¹
(1) It was related by al-Bayhaqi (1/200) through Atham ibn Ali, from Hisham, from his father, from her. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar states in Fath al-Bari (1/313): “Its isnad is hasan (sound).”
I add: Ibn Abi Shaybah also transmitted it (1/48/1) through Atham with the same chain, but as a mawquf report attributed to her. Concerning a man who becomes in a state of janaba (major ritual impurity) during the night and wishes to sleep, she said: “He should perform wudu or, if not, tayammum.” This chain is sahih (authentic).
Ismail ibn Ayyash likewise followed Atham, narrating from Hisham ibn Urwah a marfu (prophetic) version whose wording is: “Whenever he had intercourse with one of his family and felt too tired to rise, he would strike his hand against the wall and perform tayammum.”
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat (9/1 of the supplementary volumes) through Baqiyah ibn al-Walid from him, remarking: “No one has transmitted it from Hisham except Ismail.”
I reply: Ismail is weak in what he reports from the Hijazis, and this narration is of that kind; yet he is corroborated by Atham ibn Ali—who, as noted, is trustworthy—so his corroboration refutes al-Tabarani’s reservation, as is evident.
