with khalūq—a saffron perfume—and the person who is in a state of major ritual impurity, unless he performs ablution. 1
(2) Ibn al-Athir adds: “It is a well-known perfume compounded of saffron and other fragrances, and it was forbidden because it is a scent ordinarily used by women.”
(3) The report is hasan: Abu Dawud records it in his Sunan, 2/192–193, through two chains; Ahmad, al-Tahawi and al-Bayhaqi transmit it via one of them. Al-Tirmidhi and others judged it sahih, though I have pointed out certain flaws in Daif Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 29. The wording found in the first chain—the present version—has two corroborating narrations cited by al-Haythami in Majma, 5/156; on that basis I graded it hasan. One of those corroborations is related by al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, 3/143/2, on the authority of Ibn Abbas.
