Ibn Maʿīn and others also judged him weak. Ibn Ḥibbān said, “He alone reports from trustworthy narrators what bears no resemblance to their ḥadīths, so his narrations fall outside the bounds of admissible evidence.” For this reason al-ʿIrāqī, in his critical edition of al-Iḥyāʾ 2/46, decisively ruled the chain unsound.

Al-Nasāʾī recorded the report in ʿIshrat al-Nisāʾ 1/79/1, al-Mukhlis in al-Fawāʾid al-Muntaqā 10/13/1, and Ibn ʿAdī 149/2 and 201/2, all through the route of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Surjis. Al-Nasāʾī commented, “This ḥadīth is denounced, and Ṣadaqah ibn ʿAbd Allāh”—one of its transmitters—“is weak.”

Ibn Abī Shaybah 7/70/1 and ʿAbd al-Razzāq 6/194/10467 transmitted it from Abū Qilābah as a report traced back to the Prophet, but the isnād is interrupted. It was also related by al-Ṭabarānī 3/178/1, Aḥmad ibn Masʿūd in his Aḥādīth 39/1–2, al-ʿUqaylī in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ 433, al-Bāṭirqānī in his Ḥadīth 156/1, and al-Bayhaqī in al-Sunan 7/193 on the authority of Ibn Masʿūd. Al-Bayhaqī declared it weak, saying, “It is transmitted only by Mandil ibn ʿAlī, and he is not reliable.” He then cited a similar wording from Anas and added, “It is denounced.”
