was mounted on a pack-saddle¹, she should not withhold herself from him.”²
Fourth: “No woman harms her husband in this world without his wife from among the maidens of Paradise saying, ‘Do not harm him—may God destroy you! He is only a passing guest³ with you; soon he will leave you and come to us.’”⁴
(1) That is, a saddle. Lisan al-Arab states that al-qatab (also al-qatab) is the pack-saddle of a camel; al-Sihah calls it “a small saddle that fits the hump,” and al-Nihaya adds: “The qatab is to the camel what the ikaf is to other animals. The phrase urges women to comply with their husbands: if refusal is impermissible in that situation, how much more so in others?”
(2) A sound hadith. It is reported by Ibn Majah, 1/570, and Ahmad, 4/381, through Abd Allah b. Abi Awfa; by Ibn Hibban in his Sahih; and by al-Hakim (cited in al-Targhib, 3/76). Al-Mundhiri also quotes a supporting chain from Zayd b. Arqam and remarks (3/77), “al-Tabarani transmits it with a good chain.” I have traced it in al-Sahihah, no. 173.
(3) Al-Nihaya explains that al-dakhil means “a guest or lodger.”
(4) Reported by al-Tirmidhi, 2/208; Ibn Majah, 1/621; Haytham b. Kulayb in his Musnad, 5/167/1; and by Abu al-Hasan al-Tusi.
