—or the position of leadership—thereby wronging her and striking her without right. Allah, exalted is He, says:
“ And for them is a recognized right similar to that which is upon them, in accordance with what is fair; while men have a degree over them. Allah is Almighty, All-Wise ” (al-Baqarah 2:228).
He also says:
“ Men are caretakers of women by virtue of what Allah has given one over the other and by what they spend from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in the unseen that which Allah would have them guard. As for those whose rebelliousness you fear¹, admonish them, then leave them alone in bed, then strike them. If they obey you, do not seek a means against them². Indeed, Allah is Most High, Most Great ” (al-Nisaʾ 4:34).

(1) That is, their defiant disobedience (*nushuz*). Ibn Kathir states: “*Nushuz* literally means ‘rising’; thus the *nashiz* woman is one who elevates herself above her husband, abandons his commands, and turns away from him.” (2) In other words, once a wife obeys her husband in everything that Allah has permitted him to demand of her, he no longer has any claim against her: he may neither strike her nor desert her. The words, “Indeed Allah is Most High, Most Great,” serve as a warning to men who wrong their wives without cause, for Allah, the Most High, the Most Great, is their protector and will avenge those who oppress them. والرياسة فيظلمها ويضربها بدون حق فقد قال الله ﷿: ﴿وَلَهُنَّ مِثْلُ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَلِلرِّجَالِ عَلَيْهِنَّ دَرَجَةٌ وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ﴾ [البقرة: ٢٢٨] وقال: ﴿الرِّجَالُ قَوَّامُونَ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ اللَّهُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ وَبِمَا أَنْفَقُوا مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ فَالصَّالِحَاتُ قَانِتَاتٌ حَافِظَاتٌ لِلْغَيْبِ بِمَا حَفِظَ اللَّهُ وَاللَّاتِي تَخَافُونَ نُشُوزَهُنَّ١ فَعِظُوهُنَّ وَاهْجُرُوهُنَّ فِي الْمَضَاجِعِ وَاضْرِبُوهُنَّ فَإِنْ أَطَعْنَكُمْ فَلا تَبْغُوا عَلَيْهِنَّ سَبِيلاً٢ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيّاً كَبِيراً﴾ [النساء: ٣٤] .

١ أي: خروجهن عن الطاعنة قال ابن كثير: "والنشوز هو الارتفاع فالمرأة الناشز هي المرتفعة على زوجها التاركة لأمره المعرضة عنه". ٢ أي: إذا أطاعت المرأة زوجها في جميع ما يريده منها مما أباحه الله له منها فلا سبيل له عليها بعد ذلك وليس له ضربها ولا هجرانها وقوله: ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيّاً كَبِيراً﴾ تهديد للرجال إذا بغوا على النساء من غير سبب فإن الله العلي الكبير وليهن وهو منتقم ممن ظلمهن وبغى عليهن. كذا في "تفسير ابن كثير".
