Fifth: ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called me while the Abyssinians were displaying their spears in the mosque on a festival day. He said to me, ‘O Ḥumayrāʾ! 1 Would you like to watch them?’ I replied, ‘Yes.’ 2 So he had me stand…"
(1) The term Humayra is the diminutive of hamraʾ (“red”); in Ibn al-Athir’s lexicon al-Nihaya it is explained as referring to a fair complexion.
(2) This additional wording is transmitted by al-Nasai in Ashrat al-Nisa, 1/75. Ibn Hajar comments in Fath al-Bari, 2/355: “Its chain is sound, and I have not seen any authentic hadith mentioning Humayra except this one.” I add: from this it is clear that Ibn al-Qayyim’s blanket statement in al-Manar, p. 34—“Every hadith containing ‘O Humayra’ or mentioning Humayra is a fabricated lie”—is not absolutely correct, so do not be misled by it. I later came across al-Zarkashi’s words in al-Muʿtabar, 19/20: “Our teacher Ibn Kathir reported from his teacher Abu al-Hajjaj al-Mizzi that he used to say: ‘Every hadith that mentions Humayra is unsound except a single hadith on fasting in Sunan al-Nasai.’”
