- The obligation to treat one’s wife with kindness:
The husband must keep her company graciously and accommodate her in all that Allah has made lawful for her—never in what He has forbidden—especially when she is still young. Concerning this, several hadiths have been reported:
First: the Prophet ﷺ said, “The best of you are those who are best to their families, and I am the best of you to my family.” 1
Second: his statement ﷺ in the Farewell Sermon:
(1) Al-Tahawi records the hadith in al-Mushkil, 3/211, on the authority of Ibn Abbas. Al-Hakim cites only its first half (4/173) and rules the chain sound; al-Dhahabi concurs.
A corroborating report from Aisha is found in Abu Nuaym’s al-Hilya, 7/138, and in al-Darimi, 2/159, though the latter reads: “When your companion dies, leave him,” instead of “and I am the best of you to my family.” The chain is sound by Bukhari’s standards.
A further corroboration is narrated by al-Khatib in Tarikh Baghdad, 7/13, from Abu Hurayra. Al-Tirmidhi and Ahmad (2/250; 472) transmit the first half with similar wording; its chain is graded hasan (reliable).
